Alco-Screen Alcohol Saliva Test
Alco-Screen™ is a clean simple and non-invasive single use one step alcohol saliva test that can be used to detect the presence of alcohol in oral fluids. As with other saliva tests, Alco-Screen™ provides a semi-quantitative estimation of Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC).
The Alco-Screen™ alcohol detection kit is a rapid, highly effective, convenient and easy method by which to detect the presence of the drug alcohol in oral fluids and obtain an approximate indication of relative BAC. It is well established that the concentration of alcohol in saliva is very close to that in blood. This makes saliva a preferred specimen for alcohol screening, as it allows for greater detection sensitivity than breath screening methods.
The Alco-Screen™ kit can be used any time, in any place and provides rapid results in just 2 minutes, without the need for complex instrumentation or training. Each strip comes individually wrapped to maintain integrity and is completely disposable following use. It is the ideal way to substantially reduce the time and equipment cost associated with other alcohol screening methods on-site.
The Alco-Screen™ test comprises of a plastic strip and a reactive pad applied at the tip. Upon contact with solutions of alcohol the tip rapidly turns shades of green to blue to gray, in relation to the amount of alcohol present. The reactive pad employs solid phase, enzyme specific chemistry that is highly specific in this application in order to complete the test.
The Alco-Screen™ reacts with methyl, ethyl, and allyl alcohols. Alco-Screen™ will not react with alcohols that have greater than 5 carbons, or with glycerol, glycine or serine. This is due to the specificity of the alcohol oxidase enzyme, which is extracted from yeast.
(i) C2H5OH + O2 + Alcohol Oxidase → CH3CHO + H2O2
(ii) H2O2 + DH2 + Peroxidase → D/Blue + 2H2O
Based on this principle the Alco-Screen™ is capable of estimating blood alcohol concentrations in increments above 0.02 %, 0.04 %, 0.08 and 0.3 %.
Each Alco-Screen™ test kit contains of the following inclusions:
- Foil sealed Alco-Screen™ test strip
- Full instructions
The following instructions provide details on how to use Alco-Screen™ to determine the blood alcohol level of a test subject.
- Saturate the test strip with saliva.
- Wait for 2 minutes.
- Read the results.
Please note this is a subjective test that relies on the ability of the test administrator to perform an optical comparison of the reaction pad with an indicator chart.
No color change will be observed on the test strip when a negative result is returned.
Positive results will produce a color change. The coloured blocks will provide and indicitive approximation of the subjects blood alcohol level.
