PrincipleThe Alco-Screen™ test comprises of a plastic strip and a reactive pad applied at the tip. Upon contact with solutions of alcohol the tip rapidly turns shades of green to blue to gray, in relation to the amount of alcohol present. The reactive pad employs solid phase, enzyme specific chemistry that is highly specific in this application in order to complete the test.
The Alco-Screen™ reacts with methyl, ethyl, and allyl alcohols. Alco-Screen™ will not react with alcohols that have greater than 5 carbons, or with glycerol, glycine or serine. This is due to the specificity of the alcohol oxidase enzyme, which is extracted from yeast.
(i) C2H5OH + O2 + Alcohol Oxidase → CH3CHO + H2O2
(ii) H2O2 + DH2 + Peroxidase → D/Blue + 2H2O
Based on this principle the Alco-Screen™ is capable of estimating blood alcohol concentrations in increments above 0.02 %, 0.04 %, 0.08 and 0.3 %.
